A Commitment to Education Despite NBA Success
Shaquille O’Neal initially attended Louisiana State University (LSU) but left before completing his degree when he was selected as the first overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic. Despite his incredible success in professional basketball, O’Neal remained committed to his education.
In 2000, he returned to LSU and earned a bachelor’s degree in General Studies with a minor in Political Science. However, his academic journey did not stop there.
Why Shaq Returned to School for a Doctorate
O’Neal’s decision to pursue higher education was driven by three key reasons:
A Promise to His Parents: "I promised my parents I would finish school."
A Passion for Learning: "I wanted to continue learning."
A Desire for Personal Growth: "I wanted to challenge myself."
During his transition into business, O’Neal realized that executives often spoke to his agent rather than addressing him directly in meetings. This pushed him to pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Phoenix. However, rather than opting for online learning, he chose in-person classes to immerse himself fully in the experience.
O’Neal later revealed that his mother also played a pivotal role in inspiring him to pursue a doctorate. "We don’t have any PhDs in the family. So I’m like, ‘I could be the first out of all the O’Neals to be a doctor,’” he shared.
Balancing Basketball, Business, and Academics
Earning a PhD was no easy feat. O’Neal spent five years balancing classroom sessions, satellite learning, video conferencing, and online coursework to achieve his goal.
His doctoral capstone project, titled “How Leaders Utilize Humor or Seriousness in Leadership Styles,” demonstrated his deep interest in leadership development and personal growth.
Overcoming Challenges in His Educational Journey
Despite his wealth of experience and success, returning to school posed some challenges for O’Neal. Adjusting to academic rigor after years of professional sports was tough. "The hardest part was getting back into ‘high school mode.’ You ever have a teacher who assigns six chapters over the weekend? That was tough,” he admitted.
However, through determination and hard work, O’Neal graduated in 2012 with an impressive 3.813 GPA.
